Greenpeace: signatures

“Every signature helps save our seas. Greenpeace.org”

Advertising Agency: Ogilvy Johannesburg, South Africa
Creative Director: Jonathan Beggs
Art Directors: Mike Martin, Jen Maestre
Copywriter: Alison Hingle
Photographer: Dean Powell
Published: May 2008

When I first saw this campaign I was like ‘WOW that’s awesome!’. But then I thought the message was not that clear, I mean, who signs with a color pencil? It seemed a little forced, why not do it with pens?. Then looking around I got to one of the “art directors” website: Jennifer Maestre. Turns out she is the artist behind this beautiful work, but her sculptures are all this same style, and she’s got tons of them. It’s pretty easy to take existing art, put a logo on it and sell it as a campaign, isn’t it? Did Ogilvy even need a photographer and another art director to achieve this? Come on…
What are your thoughts on this issue?

Here’s the rest of the campaign:

The artwork is beautiful, but I think it would have been a better ad if Jennifer’s artwork served as an inspiration and they made their own sculptures using, as you said, something more believable, like pens.
